Bald-Faced Hornets

Bald faced hornets are social insects closely related to yellowjackets. Highly aggressive when their nesting site is disturbed. The colony implements a swarming tactic to defend the nest.

Hornet Nests

Bald-Faced Hornets

Bald-Faced Hornets

Nests typically found in trees and shrubs and are constructed from wood pulp. By mixing it with starches in their saliva they make the nest. Average colony ranges from 200 to 400 hornets.

Female bald-faced hornets will sting repeatedly to protect the colony. However, drones come from non-fertilized eggs. Since drones are males, they have no stinging capability.

Yellowjackets

Yellowjacket Nests

NEVER try to fight these alone. If you ever find yourself in their crosshairs. Do NOT run, do NOT swat. Remain calm. Take a deep breath, hold it in, and slowly walk far away from the colony.

Mud daubers are solitary insects who are not routinely aggressive towards humans, and they help control other insect and spider populations. Their coloring ranges from yellow, blue, and black.

Dauber Nests

Spiders are scared of them due to the dauber's predatory nature. Mud daubers often will hunt spiders and use the remains as extra insulation to add into their nesting tunnels.
