Easily identified due to their yellowish-brown fur with brownish-orange underbellies.  These squirrels average 17 to 28 inches in length with 8 to 13-inch-long tails.  Average weight is around 1 to 2.2 pounds.

 While fox squirrels are not very selective in their habitats, they feel more comfortable in open forest patches that are dominated by trees such as walnut, oak, pine, and hickory. The western species seem to prefer cottonwood trees.

Pine Squirrel ID

 The largest of the tree squirrels. Fox squirrels can live for around 13-18 years of age when not being picked off by predators.

Bodies are 7 to 8 inches long and tails that are 4 to 6 inches long. Their fur is rust red or gray on top with white or grayish-white undersides and tails with black bands and white edges.

Pine squirrels are found in both coniferous and deciduous woodlands. The seeds of trees make up a large part of their diet and an ideal habitat will have a variety of tree species.

Also known as chickarees. They are extremely territorial. They will sound out a noisy alarm call, a sharp bark or chirp, for up to an hour to warn of intruders.

Are 18 to 22 inches long with a tail of 7 to 10 inches. The most noticeable characteristic would be their hairy ear tufts, which extend up from each ear 2–3 cm. Usually gray with a white underbelly and a very noticeable rusty/reddish colored strip down their back.

Abert's squirrels are unique mammals found anywhere where there are enough Ponderosa pine trees to supply their nutritional needs. They will feed on the cones, buds, and twigs of Ponderosa pine trees as well as fungus, mushrooms, and tree sap.

Due to digging at the bottom of the ponderosa pine trees by these squirrels. The fungi will release the spores or seeds so more fungi can grow and protect the tree roots.
