Female carpenter bees are rarely aggressive but will sting if provoked. Male carpenter bees do not possess a stinger but can be extremely defensive when protecting and defending their nest.

They do not live in hives. Instead, females bore deep holes through wood and deposit their eggs inside. They do not eat wood, but cause damage by boring into decaying or weathered wood.

Do not have one common hive and tend to build multiple smaller nests in close proximity to each other. Often found underground, in tree cavities, or in shrubbery roots.

Sweat bees are attracted to human perspiration because they feed on the protein present in sweat. They are not hyper-aggressive but will sting if they feel threatened or if their nest is disturbed.

Honeybees

Must be protected at all costs. One of the most beneficial pollinators in history. Only female honeybees can sting, the males (drones) are not able to sting. Sadly, they perish after stinging.

You are much more likely to encounter a honeybee hive in a hollow tree or in a rock crevice. Although it is rare, honeybees can also find themselves inside the wall of a building.

These amazing insects perform a 'waggle dance' or 'honeybee dance' which involves worker honeybees informing the colony about great locations of food and water, or a new home.

Bumble Bees

The honeybee's fuzzy cousin. Bumble bees help keep our ecosystems healthy, they are commercially valuable as pollinators of many crops.

A nest that a single queen initiates is a hole in the ground, hollow tree/log, under a rock, or in some other odd cavity. Most are ground nests built in what began as rodent dens.

Bumble bees perform a unique service called “buzz pollination” (vibrating flowers until they release pollen), that helps plants produce more fruit.
