Damage is often mistaken for termites. These ants have an integral role in the decomposition of old forest wood but pose a problem when burrowing into your home and kicking out what is called frass. Typically, large black ants, but can also be medium sized and red/crimson colored.
Harvester ants live in dry, desert-like conditions. Will favor exposed open areas for their underground nests which can be around 4.5 meters deep. They are usually non-aggressive but do have a strong bite that can hurt for up to 8 hours. Coloring is dark red and orange.
Named after the erratic way they move about the world. They do not follow defined scent trails like most ant species. Considered a highly invasive species nationwide. Mostly found outside under rocks. Are brown to black with a grey hue and range in size from 1/16-1/8 of an inch.
First found their way to Colorado only in the past few decades but now are the most common species that people notice. They characteristically produce small mounds of soil at entrances of their nest, and nests are often located under pavement or rocks. They are small ants, dark-brown colored.
When disturbed, odorous house ants will raise their abdomen and emit an odor reminiscent of coconut. They do not nest indoors but may enter to forage on various foods including sweets, cooked vegetables, fruit slices and pastries. Are small (1/10-inch) black ants.
